Native Pepper Vine Piper Hederaceum Rooted Cuttings

Packet containing 1x live cutting from this native pepper species!
I originally acquired this plant as Piper novae hollandiae but the name has since been changed to Piper hederaceum and in the past it was also known as Cubeba hederacea, Chavica huegeliana, Piper australasicum, Piper paramattense, Australian pepper vine, wild pepper, climbing pepper, giant pepper vine or native pepper.
Much like other Pepper Species it is used sparingly in food as a spice for its stimulatory warming bite and also as a medicinal species in it’s own right.
Ether extractions were used for the treatment of gonorrhea and alcohol extractions have been shown to promise against lung cancer in mice. Don’t recommend any of that but it is interesting especially given it’s history of medicinal use by Aboriginal Australians.
It’s a native to Australia and is found all the way from the Victorian border right through New south Wales, up all the way through Queensland to the very tip of Cape York.

It climbs trees and sprawls across the ground but it isn’t heavy or destructive the way some other larger vines can be and it makes a great space filler in a shady bare neglected patches of the garden. Full sun gives fine growth and heavy shade makes the leaves grow huge.

I don’t really eat it very often and when I do its just grabbing a pinch to munch on while I’m cruising past but I really value the habitat and shelter it provides to the critters. This helps increase my local diversity and that in turn means lots of predatory insects that help me keep the insect pests under control.
The fruit feed a range on birds especially native doves, Golden Bowerbirds and Riflebirds.

Growing it is super easy, just remove the cutting from the package, plant the lower end in a sandy well draining soil mix and that’s it.
If you want to you could even cut it up into half a dozen smaller pieces and provided you have a three nodes on each and plant them at least one node deep you will have a heap of plants in no time.
I’ve never had a failure with this fella.

Grown by me and the Mrs organically, no chems, no nasties, no problems!!!

NOT FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA or TASMANIA due to added expense and drama involved.

If you decide to try and buy anyway, this item will not be sent. 🙂
