Pacara Earpod Tree Enterolobium Contortisiliquum Seeds
Packet of 10+ large fresh viable seeds!
I get asked for this fella all the time so I eventually tracked some down and here they are folks!
This is the other “ear pod” tree, the one known by Enterolobium glaucescens, Mimosa contortisiliqua, Acacia melalobiata, Acacia saponaria, Calliandra pacara, Feuilleea contortisiliqua, Feuilleea pacara, Mimosa contortisiliqua, Enterolobium timbouva, timbo, timbo, timbo colorado, para, morong timbo, camba-cambi, timbo-pyita, timbo colorado, timbo cedro, oreja de negro, pacara, toco, oreja de abuela, tamboril, timbuva, orelha de negro, Pacara earpod tree or just earpod tree.
This is not Enterolobium Cyclocarpum Elephant Ear Pod which I also have seeds of.
It is famed as an anthelmitic or antiparasitic due to the toxic effect it has on intestinal worms and internal parasites.
The naturally occurring chemicals in the sweet caramel flesh of the pod, also the roots and the seed coat kill and/or stuns and stupefies them, without killing or stunning or stupefying you.
Well that’s the theory anyway, never tested it myself…
Most folks just grow them as an ornamental and I can see why.
They look like something from the plains of Africa, big shady canopy much like a Jacaranda.
The birds and possums were really getting stuck into the pods of the ones I saw too.
They are normally found in tropical South America, southern Brazil, and temperate South America, and it is often used as a street or park tree due to its rapid growth and very attractive appearance.
It is also used extensively as a forestry timber from both wild harvesting and commercial plantings.
I am getting a good germination by filling a small area of seed coat off then soaking in warm to hot water. (Quick rub on the concrete does the job, but only on the side of the seed, not the point where the shoot comes out).
Just boil the kettle, then wait a few minutes, put the scarified seeds in bowl and pour on the very hot but no longer boiling water.
I do that in the morning when I get up, then that night I drain the water and repeat.
The next morning I plant them out.
Shoots start popping up in about a month.
