Tarahumara Chia Salvia Tiliifolia Seeds
Packet of 50+ very rarely available seeds!
This guy is originally a native to Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and parts of central and southern America. It is also found in China and Africa.
It is a close relative to the much more common Chia, and it is used in all the same ways.
The seeds mixed with water swell up and form a gel looking a lot like frogs eggs.
The Aztec warriors relied on Chia and just 1 tablespoon roasted, ground, then added to water is said to sustain a person’s energy level for 24 hours.
They are sold as an ingredient in drinks, the most common form being chia fresca which is just raw chia seeds, lime juice and water and it really is refreshing.
They are also ground and cooked with wheat or corn.
We add them to cereal and muesli or icy cold drinks on hot days.
Sometimes I fry a few up in butter and spread them on flat bread or pizza bases with a couple over ripe tomatoes.
Adds a real nutty oily crunch.
The leaves have insecticidal properties and apparently when dried, powdered, mixed with oil or fat, then slapped on thickly they will kill headlice.
Never tried it myself…
The common names for this fella are Tarahumara chia(after the natives who use this species extensively).
They are sometimes sold as an ornamental as Linden sage overseas and it’s easy to see why. They really are beautiful and very hardy too.
I have them popping up in the greenhouse all over the place and for me they are a real asset.
Grown by me and the Mrs organically, no chemicals, no nasties no problems!!!
