Illawarra Flame Tree Brachychiton Acerifolius Seeds
Packet of 10+ freshly harvested seeds!
This huge spectacular red flowering native tree is found from Illawarra in NSW all the way up the coast of QLD into Cape York.
In the cooler months it is covered in glossy dark green leaves, most of which fall off before it flowers in Summer giving and really great source of mulch and humus for the garden.
The tree is the main food source for a heap of different butterflies, and the nutritious seeds were traditionally roasted as a food source. Later still they were used by settlers as a coffee substitute, but unless I did something wrong it isn’t that flash in my opinion.
It’s ok, but it’s not really Coffee…
This fella is a type of native Kurrajong and for me it’s just a beautiful ornamental tree.
It isn’t the other common Flame tree that I also sell seeds of.
It’s been know by the following common and botanical names over the years, with Illawarra Flame Tree being the most common, but also Lacebark Tree, Flame tree, Flame Kurrajong, Kurrajong, Flame Stem, Brachychiton acerifolius var. acerifolius, Brachychiton acerifolius var. typicum, and Clompanus acerifolia.
Drought and frost tolerant it has become well known as a feature, street or park tree, not just here but all around the world too, and in my opinion it’s well worth planting.
Wild harvested by me and the Mrs sustainably, no chems, no nasties, no problems!!!
