Viola Tricolor Heartease Violet Seeds

The Mrs loves these guys as they flower flat out from the beginning of Winter right up to the middle of Summer.

Perfect flower for beginner gardeners, great as cut vase flowers, candied edible decorations, groundcover to retain soil moisture, and even has a long and varied history of use as a medicinal!

It was once commonly known as heartsease, heart’s ease, heart’s delight, due to the saponins it contains having an apparent regulatory effect on the heart.

Other names include Tickle my fancy, Jack jump up and kiss me, Come and cuddle me, Three faces in a hood, Love in idleness, Johnny jump up, Wild pansy, Violet etc.

Originally a European wild flower found growing as an annual or short-lived perennial.

A long history of use in herbalism and it has been recommended, for rheumatism and cystitis due to its natural diuretic nature, epilepsy, skin conditions, fungal disease, eczema, respiratory problems like asthma, and cold symptoms, the treatment chest complaints such as bronchitis and even whooping cough!

The flowers have also been used to make yellow, green and blue-green dyes, while the leaves can be used to make a chemical indicator.

Modern medicine tells us that it contains containing cyclotides, which are peptides which have proven to be useful in drug development due to their size and structure giving rise to high level of stability.
Many cyclotides, like those found in Viola tricolor are cytotoxic, which means that they could be used to treat cancers, and whole plant extractions are anti-microbial and have a strong anti-inflammatory in animal studies.
