Swedish Brown Beans Phaseolus Vulgaris Seeds
Packet of 10+ home grown organic seeds!
These guys are super popular in Scandinavian cuisine and as the name suggests, they were originally from Sweden.
Apparently they have been pumping them out there since 1650-ish!
From there they have spread around the world and because of their versatility they are in the top 10 beans in a most places worldwide now.
They thrive all year round except the heat of summer where they get a bit stressed.
Me and the Mrs have been selecting for hardiness and they are much more heat tolerant than they were years ago, but even so, keep that in mind.
In the cooler months they really pump and they produce heaps of pods in a very small area.
The best way to cook them is to soak overnight in the fridge, tip out the water, cook them as per usual in soups, stews, casseroles, pasta sauces, spicy curries, whatever really.
This overnight cold soak give them the opportunity to break down a little and double in size, becoming really tender, but at the same time the proteins set and they hold they shape without falling apart even in rapid boiling.
You can also pick them young and green and use in stirfries, We eat a lot like that too.
I’m told these are the main bean used in the famous USA “Pork and beans” due to the large Scandinavian population.
Anyway, if you want a bean, these are a good one, and as me and the Mrs have been growing them for years, they are a little more adapted to the harsh Aussie conditions.
