Spach Cactus Soehrensia Echinopsis Spachiana Trichocereus Spachianus
1x very well-rooted ~12cm Spach pup, Ideal for grafting!
It will be sent bare-rooted wrapped well in recycled materials to avoid transit damage and rot.
On arrival just remove them from the packaging and stand upright in a pot of completely bone dry sandy soil mix, being careful not to bury it too deep.
Do NOT water for a few weeks to allow the plants to heal and form a callous, but after that you can give them a good soak once a fortnight or when the soil has dried out.
Most often just called “Spach”, this fella is another cactus that folks just can’t agree on the name. Soehrensia spachiana seems to be the latest one its been given, Echinopsis spachiana is what I though was the accepted until very recently, Trichocereus spachianus hasn’t been valid for ages, mid 70’s, but is still the most common botanical name used by far.
It also gets called Cereus santiaguensis, Cereus spachianus, Echinocereus spachianus, Echinopsis santiaguensis, Soehrensia spachiana, Spachiana soehrensia, Trichocereus manguinii, Trichocereus santiaguensis, Trichocereus shaferi, Trichocereus spachianoides, Trichocereus trichosus and the common names white torch cactus, Spach’s Soehrensia, Spachiana Cactus, golden column, golden torch, torch cactus, white torch cactus, sea urchin cactus and no doubt lots of other names too.
It is super popular as an ornamental, and particularly as a rootstock for grafting cactus which gives the scion much faster growth rates and a greater resistance to climate and soil dramas. It is also commonly used to make unusual hybrids.
Massive white flowers that bloom at night like Night blooming Cereus and Dragonfruit.
I’m told this particular one has larger than average tasty fruit too, but unfortunately I haven’t tasted mine yet cos.
I keep running out of other rootstock and lopping mine up to use cactus grafting experiments.
This fella makes an awesome root stock for an endless number of other much more difficult and slower growing cacti. This is the main reason I have this fella in the collection, and if you are into cactus too your gonna want a few of these guys too!
Pretty much anything that fails with Dragonfruit Rootstock works great with this fella.
Don’t get me wrong, Hylocereus Dragonfruit make the best rootstock for speed of growth. It’s pretty undeniable in my opinion but ONLY if they are trimmed and prepared properly!
Unfortunately Dragonfruit are not compatible with every single cactus species out there, but that’s where Spach comes in.
Spach is compatible with heaps of stuff especially Trichocereus, and if you’re feeling fancy you can graft a chunk of this Spach to the dragonfruit rootstock, then stick the much harder to graft species to the Spach.
Triple-graft sandwich with Spach as the glue in the middle for maximum growth rates, but none of the negatives!
Dragonfruit rootstock > Spach inner-stock > slower/rarer/weaker scion gets a massive push.
= Pup factory and/or Amazingly fast growth rates!
Early days but I gotta say, bloody hell this works well, and I highly recommend it!
Grown by me and the Mrs organically, no chems, no nasties, no problems!
