Other hobbies you invest time, money, and physical labour to get a set result.
You buy the equipment and materials, and you go do this awesome thing that you enjoy in your spare time. In return for that investment you get a great big chunk of fun, knowledge, self-satisfaction, and exercise. Great stuff.
But if the hobby is gardening then you invest time, money and physical labour and in return you still get the big chunk of fun, knowledge, self-satisfaction, and exercise, but now you also get "profit" and food too!
Lettuce is a great example. When shortages were hectic and prices were insane it wasn't really an issue for us as we already grow a heap of cool stuff. To my eye more than $3 a kilo is just too much for a tomato, same deal with capsicum and leafy greens, and then on top of that they only sell the crappy cricket ball tomatoes that never fully ripen up, and who knows what conditions they were grown in? Ehh, no thanks.
With me being a combination of consistently broke and a major tight-arse, growing our own, especially the expensive stuff is a real no-brainer.
But not only the edible plants, but the pretty ornamentals flowers too. If you buy a football, cricket bat, knitting needles, books etc then you get some cool tools that only lose value and deteriorate over time eventually becoming worthless. Not a big deal, but that's just how it is.
But buy some cool seeds or plants and the odds of them becoming worthless over time is pretty low. Most things do grow and thrive despite my neglect. Those that don't fail, not only do they maintain their current market value, they can be divided to produce more of the same value item indefinitely, for no additional cost at all.
You can't cut a cricket bat in half to make two like a bloody magic pudding, but you can do EXACTLY that with heaps of different plants. A football, cricket bat, knitting needles or book can't make babies either, but most plants produce hundreds of them every year which is a level of growth unmatched by any other investment.
Getting your hands on any old plant you like the look of and growing it is a great way to spend your spare time. With a little planning that first plant could produce millions more pretty much for free.
If that sounds like a good way to spend your hobby time, then this is the place to go.
