Rainbow Glass Gem Popcorn Zea Mays Seeds
Packet of 20+ home grown organic seeds!
Each packet contains many different colours and shades of grain, just like the picture.
Yellow, red, pink, purple, even blue and a couple white and deep black or splotched ones every now and then.
This lot has the potential to look like any, or all of the above and you won’t know which genes were stored in which grain until they grow.
A colourful lucky dip of sorts!
Originally it was a mixture of the “Glass gem Corn” that you see so often, and I added few other multi-coloured mixtures such as “Fiesta mix” and “Confetti”.
This year I even mixed in some “Rainbow corn” I got from a friend too.
Due to the huge variation in genes in each grain (due to the unpredictable wind and bees) the exact mixture of colours in the progeny is a total mystery for the moment.
If you do get anything really cool, send me a picture or two, or even better, wack them up on our Fair Dinkum Seeds Facebook Page.
I will happily give you store credit or trade or barter for some of your crop….
Anyway, they are a staple grain in many cultures, and these coloured varieties are low brix (sugars) and high starches and protein.
These are not a hybrid “Sweet corn”, unlike all the other modern hybrids and supermarket corn.
But, they are perfect for popping, just add a splash of oil and salt in a pot, same as normal. Ground they can be used for flour in tortillas and pita breads, or soaked whole in a little wood ash or lye and then chopped or ground into grits.
They also taste good when still really tiny and used whole Asian style. About 7cm to 10cm long is perfect.
Eaten as a normal vegetable pick the cobs when the kernels turn from opaiche white and start to colour up, or when the tassels just start to brown and dry a little.
For a grain crop, just let nature do her thing and pick the cobs when the plant dies off and dries completely.
That’s about it, colourful corn seeds for you guys to grow.
Grown by us organically, no chems, no nasties, no dramas!!!
