Stinging Nettle Urtica dioica
Packet of 200+ seeds!
It’s an awesome plant and its health benefits are nearly endless it seems.
Google it, there is lots of data out there. There are even nettle eating competitions, which I found quite bazaar? But hey, whatever floats your boat……..
It is originally a native to Europe and most of Asia, but its been spread pretty much everywhere us humans have roamed, due to its usefulness.
Once you get it established in nice cool shady spot (we have one lot under the veranda and one lot next to the water tank) they can be harvested a couple times a week to make a refreshing tea.
Even just use it like a green vegie and add it to pasta dishes as you would basil or any other herb. The whole plant is covered with tiny, needle-like hairs that contain acetylcholine, formic acid, histamine, serotonin, and other compounds that cause a painful sting if touched. But, when cooked the hairs dissolve really quickly and a light saute is all that’s needed to wilt the plants and make it harmless and delicious!
The stings themselves are not really that painful, but gloves are useful when harvesting.
Its said to improve arthritic pain and inflammation, gout, rheumatism, fibromyalgia, tendinitis (which I can attest to), and even to lessen the symptoms of Lupus and other auto-immune diseases.
Its a strong blood alkoniser and that helps to lower uric acid levels in the joints which is just what you need if you have gout.
Due to its very high Iron content its been used for millenia to treat anemia, and as a milk production stimulant, in nursing mothers.
Tonics made from the leaves are used as a herbal treatment and a homeopathic remedy, especially for the relief of allergies such as asthma, hay fever, hives and other allergic dermatitis.
Said to reduce gingivitis and prevents plaque as a mouth rinse, relieve chest congestion and coughing, bronchitis, COPD and TB and be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, MS, ALS, Sciatica, stop bed wetting, prevent prostrate enlargement, premature baldness and greying, acne, wort’s, haemorrhoid’s, gas, Celiac disease, mouth ulcers and even kill internal parasites!!!
Now I am just repeating statements others have made, and I am by no means a health professional, but I can say, its very high in all the good stuff, especially Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, Boron, Silicon and Vitamin A the B group and Beta-Carotene.
Eat it as a regular part of your diet and I’m telling you, you will feel the improvement to your energy levels.
Use it as a tea, a herb or a green veg, it tastes pretty good in a quiche instead of the spinach!
Hard to find fresh seeds and that’s the key with this one. We harvest and pack at least three times a year, often four or five.
Grown by us organically, no nasties, no chems, no problems!!!
